Perched high within the landlocked mountain folds of Davao de Oro sits a popular highland destination. Calamba Farm Sea of Clouds, located in Sitio Patung, Barangay Mapawa, Maragusan, is famous for its panoramic views of Maragusan City and its dramatic early-morning weather phenomena.
If you are a photographer chasing the ultimate sunrise or a traveler seeking a tranquil escape into rolling mists, this spot offers a unique atmosphere. However, in true field-tested fashion, a successful trip here requires balancing the beautiful landscape with the rustic, unvarnished realities of the venue’s infrastructure.

🌅 The Magic Window: Chasing the Sea of Clouds
The lush, green valley backdrop of Maragusan is beautiful, but the true prize is the thick, white blanket of low-altitude clouds coating everything around the mountain peaks.

- The 5:00 AM – 6:00 AM Peak: The clouds are typically most defined, dense, and pure white during this early hour, offering a magical view as the sun begins to breach the horizon.
- Weather-Dependent Longevity: While the rising sun often begins to dissipate the phenomenon past 6:00 AM—turning the heavy white floor into thin mists or scattering white ribbons along the ridges—the sea of clouds can actually remain intact well beyond 6:00 AM depending entirely on local weather conditions, humidity, and colder mountain temperatures.
- The Quirky Attractions: The landscape is beautifully decorated with vibrant plants and flowers. Structurally, the property features 1970s and 1980s-inspired architectural designs, utilizing stone-style castle walls and pillars around the viewing areas.

- The Mt. Fuji Effect: There is a miniature replica of Mount Fuji on the grounds. If you visit on a busy Sunday when the crowds roll in, the staff will turn on an artificial smoke machine inside the replica to simulate an active volcanic plume for photos.
- The Resident Animals: Animal lovers will easily spot a resident monkey, peaceful nesting doves tucked away at the back of the property, and a remarkably docile, friendly dog named Cooper who welcomes arriving travelers.

🍳 Highland Comfort Food & On-Site Amenities
If you arrive early to catch the mist, you don’t have to worry about packing heavy breakfast boxes:
- The Morning Menu: The on-site canteen serves early breakfast meals for walk-ins, alongside dinner services specifically for overnight guests. You can even request specific custom meals ahead of time if traveling with a group.
- Native Treats: For the quintessential highland experience, order their native hot chocolate (Sikwate) paired with traditional Suman (sticky rice cakes).
- The Backup Store: If you forgot trail snacks, batteries, or basic personal supplies, their main store is fully stocked with standard food items and everyday essentials.
- Public Restrooms: For day-trippers, a clean public toilet is accessible near the main viewing areas.
⚠️ The Candid Reality Check: Managing Expectations
1. The Access Road & Parking Bottleneck
To keep your trip stress-free, there are several structural and logistical limitations you must prepare for before making the drive up Barangay Mapawa:
The final approach driving up to Calamba Farm consists entirely of an unpaved dirt and gravel road. Once you arrive, note that the parking area does not belong to the resort; it is owned and operated by the residential family living directly next door. The parking zone is small, frequently congested for four-wheeled vehicles, and lacks clear landmarks or designated lane spaces.
2. Room Accommodation Conditions

If you choose to rent the ₱1,200 overnight room, expect highly basic, utilitarian shelter rather than a polished hotel experience:
- Size & Amenities: The rooms and their attached private toilets are very small. They are entirely non-airconditioned (though the high mountain altitude naturally drops the temperature at night).
- Pack Your Own Gear: The overnight rate does not include toiletries or towels. You must pack your own hygiene kits.
- Maintenance Issues: The main building housing these rooms has remained uncompleted for a long time. The higher floors are completely unfinished, exposed, and dilapidated. Because of these halted construction risks, certain zones and upper stairwells are permanently closed off to the public for safety. The rooms are due for maintenance to make them feel cleaner and more genuinely accommodating.

🚗 How to Get to Sitio Patung, Mapawa
From the Maragusan town center, navigate east toward the highland access roads leading up to Barangay Mapawa. As your vehicle begins to climb the steep sections along the highway, stop at the local tourism checkpoint to settle the ₱15 environmental fee. Be prepared for rough, rocky lanes on the final approach. 4×4 vehicles, sturdy SUVs, or high-clearance motorcycles are highly recommended for the unpaved dirt sectors.
