A Tale of Two Peaks: Exploring the Beauty and Contrasts of Mt. Mambutig and Mt. Kulago in Tarragona and Malaybalay

Do you want another taste of Mt. Kulago? It’s not exactly identical, but there are similarities to appreciate. So, which of the two is comparably better? Both boast different ambiance, energy, and beauty, prompting me to recommend hikers to explore both Mt. Mambutig in Tarragona and Mt. Kulago in Malaybalay.

Description of Mt. Mambutig

The first thing to notice is the fresh cogon grasses brushing against your legs. The silhouettes of the yellow and green stroke each other, resembling a dance with the wind in the open landscape. There’s about a 50-60 degree peak assault to trek and what you might imagine as an intimidating downhill. You may choose to hold on to some short grasses, or let your butt be prepared to break your fall – it’s your choice.

Summit Views

The trail widens as you near the summit and campsite. The entire open landscape reveals its magic loud and clear. The wind blows away any doubt that this place is truly beautiful. Observing the wide vastness of the ocean and witnessing the varied hues of blue, you can’t help but wonder what lies beyond. At times, the sea seems to stop moving, as if it wants you to paint it. Then, you see Dahican of Mati with its long streaming beachline, admirably white and clean. Somebody mentioned that those at Dahican can also catch a glimpse of Mt. Mambutig.

On the opposite side, you will see the majestic Mayo’s Peak, which, at that time, was partly gloomy and covered with clouds. It is considered to be the highest peak of Tarragona. Most high peak mountains often look very distant, dark, and mysterious, allowing every suspicion and speculation about what lies out there. Well, what could be so beautifully hidden and conspiring than that of Mt. Hamiguitan at Governor Generoso, which is also seen in the distance? Both mountains resemble a pre-emptive catch basin for any rain coming to the flat lands.

So, Mt. Mambutig is in Tarragona with an estimated hike of around 1.5 hours. It’s suitable for beginners, those with handicaps, and anyone who simply wants to be with nature’s best. Like any mountain, there are stiff edges and slopes at the peak side, so be careful not to slip. It is, however, a long way down. My advice is to wear pants and arm sleeves to protect against cogon grass. If the weather forecast is sunny, please bring an umbrella, or others might think you’ve been to Dahican beach beforehand.
