Lake Leonard was called “Crocodile Lake” by the Mansaka natives in the area. According to Mansaka folklore, there were scary crocodiles on its shores that frightened the tribal communities. The legend also tells the story of a Mansaka crocodile hunter named Habana, whose adventures in the 1960s confirmed the presence of crocodiles in the calm lake waters. Although today, there are no more sightings of the reptiles.
Lake Leonard is situated in the highland village of New Leyte in the municipality of Maco. The lake is a 200-hectare caldera of Mt. Leonard Kniazeff, one of the country’s 22 active volcanoes. This beautiful lake, filled with water lilies and lotus, is a popular spot for locals to unwind and relax.
